About Pu’uwai

Pu‘uwai outrigger canoe club was founded in 1992 and is located at the mouth of the Wailua River. We strive to teach paddling skills, perpetuate the cultural significance of canoe paddling, and preserve the traditions of the past. We are committed to enhancing the well-being of our members and our community.

Our adult program offers a novice program that welcomes first-time paddlers. Our summer “Na Opio” program is one of the largest on Kauai, offering over 130 youth ages 9-18 daily practices and weekly regattas. We support a “Pink Paddlers” program in which we help cancer survivors train for an inter-island race. We also support the Kapaa High School’s paddling team and it’s ROTC Swim, Run, Paddle program.

By participating in this race,  you are helping us keep our club accessible and affordable for families on Kauai. Each year, club volunteers donate thousands of hours to coaching and mentoring our paddlers. Our largest financial challenge is to maintain, repair, and replace aging or damaged equipment. Canoes cost $10-20,000 or more. Paddles for youth and novice adults, canvases, and amas (outriggers) add up to thousands more.

All proceeds from this race will go towards equipment that supports our adult and youth programs and helps us fulfill our mission of encouraging athletic endeavors based on Hawaiian traditions of Aloha, Hō’ihi (respect), and Ikaika Kākāuha (Athletic Strength).

You can learn more about the club and find a practice schedule on our website.
